Project Description

Polish Sailing Ship in Singapore to Commemorate 100th Anniversary of Regaining Independence

Inaugural Port Call graced by Poland’s Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation Mr Marek Gróbarczyk and Singapore Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport Mr. Khaw Boon Wan

To celebrate 100 years of Polish Independence, the Polish three-masted tall ship Dar Młodzieży (‘Gift of Youth’) made a call at Singapore port from 9 to 12 October 2018. The visit is part of the ship’s nearly year-long cruise around the world – the ‘Independence Sail’ – to showcase Poland and celebrate the anniversary in global public space.

Poland regained its independence in 1918, following 123 years of the partitions orchestrated by its powerful neighbours: German, Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. Their collapse in an aftermath of World War One, together with perseverance of Polish people, led to creating the independent Republic of Poland. During the almost one-year long “Independence Sail” Dar Młodzieży has been set to visit 22 ports in over a dozen countries around the world. Singapore is among a group of world cities that were selected for this extraordinary port tour. At Singapore the ship was be at the halfway point of its voyage.

Results and Achievements

  • Created an integrated social media and PR campaign that targeted a wide range of media including newspapers, online, influencers and broadcast TV.
  • Supported the Polish Embassy throughout the campaigns and invited media to cover the events. The Dar Młodzieży was berthed at the VivoCity Promenade from 9 to 12 October 2018, and hosted a number of free activities and events that were open to the public. These included: an aerial dance performance by the Mira-Art Troupe from the coastal city of Gdansk on the evening of 9 October; and free viewings of the vessel, as well as an exhibition titled “Fathers of Independence” on 10 and 11 October. The vessel departed from Singapore to continue her world tour on 12 October 2018.
  • Resulted in major media coverage including ChannelnewsAsia, Suria, Vasanthan, He Zao Bao, Straits Times and travel magazines.
  • Kept the social media platforms active with pre-event updates and onsite updates to engage local communities. The event resulted in great success with local audience and tourists.
